Greeks were very conscious of change,
with Aristotle's doctrine of the
four causes:

"that from which,
as its constitutive material, something comes, for example the bronze
of the statue ..." |

| The formal cause in
that case is an account of what the statue is - a statue, perhaps
of the goddess Athena. |
FORMAL |
|
|
EFFICIENT |
"the source of
the first beginning of change, ... for example ... the father is the
cause of the child." |
|
|
and
FINAL. |
This is the purpose,
"that for the sake of which [something is done], as health is
that of walking around ..." |
