| Biometric
technologies make use of information inherent in personal
characteristics, such as: hand shape; body odour; dynamic signature
verification; facial verification; and striation patterns of the
iris, in order to verify identity. It is obviously far more
difficult to steal a retinal pattern or fingerprint (is it really?),
than an ID badge or PIN. No system is 100% secure, but biometrics
offers more security than PIN or ID badges.
Biometrics extends to behaviour such as keystroke dynamics (typing rhythm) and more recently the analysis of mobile phone use which can identify when fraud is occurring. The advent of biometrics shows clearly how the issues of clinical confidentiality and the sensitivity of DNA research arises, as they concern unique personal characteristics. A sign of sensitivity of information and hence for the maintenance of confidentiality. |
